What is a Labrakita?

16 July 2019

I have had a lot of questions about where the name Labrakita Marketing came from since I officially launched my business a few of weeks ago. A brand name should be unique and stand out. For many this may simply be their name or an acronym/initials. Ideally it should also include an indication of what you do, but it is more important that you are not confused with the competition.

I knew I wanted the word “marketing” to be in there but what else? I needed something that really made me stand out as there are a lot of marketing professionals. In my case my name was out because another Samantha Tonge, my namesake in Manchester, has become a best-selling author and will always be far more famous than me. “Tonge” isn’t particularly unusual either so I ruled out “Samantha Tonge Marketing” and “Tonge Marketing” immediately.

I still wanted it to be something that was personal and meant something to me as I was setting up on my own. So, what other options? My street address includes the word “Beechwood”, but it turns out a “Beechwood Marketing” already exists. I live in Uphall Station but that makes for a pretty dull name, the same goes for West Lothian. Edinburgh has the same issue plus the fact that, although I seem to spend most of my time there, I am not actually based in Edinburgh so it would feel dishonest to use it.

I spent an evening trying to think up names, nothing was standing out. Then my dog Ty started trying to get my attention, I don’t think he was very happy about being ignored. That’s when it hit me – I could use him to create a brand name.

Ty is a Labrador-Akita cross or “Labrakita”. It’s not exactly a designer breed but hey, there are Labradoodles, why not Labrakitas? We adopted him from a rescue in 2016. He hadn’t been trained (thankfully with the exception of toilet training) and he is a strong, excitable boy.

After three years of hard work he still gets a bit over-excited from time to time but he is a good boy and we love him very much. He gives us so much joy. Now he’s given me something else too – a unique brand name!

Sadly, the organisation that rescued Ty can no longer take in dogs but if you are interested in supporting or adopting a rescue dog please have a look at the wonderful Edinburgh Dog and Cat home.

If you have just started out and need some help to come up with a name that is distinctive, or you need to take another look as you aren’t standing out from your competition, call me on 07791 521439 or email me at samantha@labrakita.co.uk
